Cat
To sign cat, with both hands pinch your thumb and index finger together by the side of each cheek, while keeping your remaining fingers straight out. As you pinch your fingers together, take them from each side of your face outward. The sign looks just like you are teasing your whiskers straight, so add a smug smile to complete the look of a self-satisfied cat!
An alternative ASL sign for cat is to simply use your dominant hand to do the same motion of teasing your whisker out from one cheek.
SIGN USAGE
Pet signs like cat are often favorites among children. Most children develop an early fascination with household animals. So take advantage of that natural interest, and every time your see their eyes following the cat around, do the cat sign.

Flash Card
We like to make a game out of using all the animal flash cards. Make the sound and say the name of the animal, then have your baby make the sign. Remember if you have a real cat, that always beats using the flash card.

Great website, informative for me.
Is BSL the same as ASL? My grandson was born deaf and I would like him to learn the correct signs from the beginning. I would like to purchase several aids for all my family members but I want to do this correctly.
Thanks

The signs we use are the same as American Sign Language.

This is amazing stuff, I can’t believe our baby is already communicating with us. Thanks for all the great tips!
