Surprise

To sign surprise, you must place both hands parallel to your eyes with index and thumb touching. Pull both hands away while opening fingers and making a facial expression of surprise.

This is very similar to the sign for wake up, but the index finger and thumb are located a bit further off with surprise, instead of directly under the eyes with thewake up sign.

Developing emotional expression is very important. When you teach this sign, make sure your face is highly expressive. Because “surprise” is a complex emotion, this sign is best suited for toddlers who are expanding their vocabulary.
