Is there more than one way to say don’t?
Sure, Kezia. Since “don’t” is usually signed along with the specific action to be avoided, you basically shake your head (negation) and perform the sign for the action (to be avoided this time). Finally, many people mean “don’t” when simply signing “not” (where you flick your thumb forward from touching your chin while the rest of your fingers are in a closed fist). Is the last sign what you had in mind?
What sign would you use to convey “danger”? For example, my daughter has started to open cabinets and touch the oven (not while on, but she wouldn’t know the difference if it was on). She has also started to pull at cords and what not. I don’t want her to hurt herself or something to fall on her. How would you convey that something is unsafe?

Early on we simply used no and don’t as our little ones got older we actually introduced the sign for danger.
