To sign Earth, form your non-dominant hand into a fist and hold it steady in front of you. Take your open, dominant number 5 hand, then grasp your non-dominant fist on either side with your thumb and middle finger. (This combined figure will remind you of toilet paper hanging on its wall-suspended roller.)
Pivot your dominant hand up and down as you keep your non-dominant fist steady, reminding you that the Earth rotates on its axis.
Teach your baby or toddler the Earth sign when they see our blue planet on screen or in picture books, especially when we are celebrating Earth Day. If you teach the word earth to mean soil or dirt, however, then teach the sign for dirt.
This is a useful flash card taught best in conjunction with land and water forms, or when you are beginning to cultivate in your child a sense of care for our environment, plants, and animals.
