The Flash Cards help you extend your baby’s vocabulary. Use the flash cards to teach words that you don’t encounter in everyday life, such as giraffe and elephant. And use the flash cards to help baby generalize, so he learns that the word dog applies to many different dogs, and not just his pet.

I’m looking to buy the premium kit but it is out of stock. Will it be in stock at some point in the future? My son is behind in his speech. He currently does not say anything but very clearly understands what we say and what’s around him. So while I’m testing to get him to talk I’d also like to teach him to sign. We have been working for a little while but it would be nice to have a whole foundation to go on.

Hi Leti, thanks for your interest in our premium kit. And sorry to hear about your son’s current challenges. Please bookmark our page for any future updates. If we don’t restock soon, it is likely we will be going all digital instead. Rest assured though, you are free to download all our flashcards on every Dictionary page as you see fit. Our Dictionary is also easily viewable – including our videos – on mobile. We hope our resources help in getting your son to communicate with ease as he catches up with speech.

Is there a way to print all 600 flashcards at one link or in smaller sizes (like 4 to a page)?

    Hello,
I am a teacher for DHH kids and I would love to have all 600 flash professionally printed as this would really help with vocabulary development. Is there any way of doing that? If not maybe a file that has all 600 words together to save some time and then I can print 4 on a page, cut and laminate them. It would be soooo very helpful for at least a file with all of them or chunked by the alphabet all the A words together, B words together etc.
please let me know what can be done. Thank you so much for creating this resource.

    ADMIN – Hi Kimberly,

We do not have such document. Our dictionary which is available for sale has almost all of the 600 signs available. You can find the dictionary in our store.

I would get the set and then print them yourself by placing them in groups on your printer to get multiple cards on 1 page. Cut apart and laminate then place them wherever you want. A set per classroom or even around the house. ASL is a great way to make children bi-lingual. As a former teacher I signed the alphabet while singing the ABC song. One should also teach all the “sight words” for reading as a child gets ready for school.
Finally, start signing early – I began signing to my baby immediately after his birth. He understood the signs before being able to form them with his hands or speak.

Where can I get thick flash cards printed? I would love to be able to print these flash cards on thick cardboard so my baby doesn’t ruin them.

    ADMIN – Hi Laura,

    Two options

    (1) You can print the free flash cards on cardstock (available at any office supply store). If you have a laminator, that helps too.

    (2) We have flash cards available for sale that are on a thick board-book type material.

My husband is able to check out the My Signing Time dvds from the school library and I started them with my son last week. I absolutely love them!! I wanted to get flashcards to help supplement the movies and I stumbled upon this website. Thank you so much for providing these downloads free of charge. I looked up flashcards on amazon but could not find beginner cards that were affordable. I like that I can look up the words we have gone over in the movies. However, not all of the words we have learned are on your site. I left a comment on another page asking about the words in black. Can we also request other words? Today we went over family, feelings and fun. I know how to sign daughter and son but a visual would still be nice. Home, silly, scared, gloves, feelings, and wind were in today’s group. I am sure this is asking too much but I figured it does not hurt to ask. I have other words that you do not have as well but do not have the list on hand. Again, thank you for this opportunity!!

My son just turned 13 months… and we can communicate! Its awesome! He completely understands that when my hands move, I’m speaking, and he works hard to mimic the movements. He tells me he wants to go outside, eat a tomato, airplane, and ready for bed.

I believe it took so long because I didn’t realize he was signing. But once I caught on, we really took off. Thank you for this site.

    ADMIN,
    Hi Amber,
We currently don’t have a zip file mainly because every parent wishes to personalize their curriculum to include only the signs that are relevant. One nice time savings option is the 52 card baby sign language flashcard set available at our baby sign language store

We also have a neat garden baby sign language collection available here.

    Hello,

I bought the standard kit recently but realized that there were several key words missing from the flash cards.
I was wondering if it was possible to purchase a bigger set of flash cards as I think it’s very practical to learn with baby.

    ADMIN,
    Dear Celine,
We are so glad you are enjoying your kit. Each child is different and each household prioritizes different words based on their daily interactions. Our dictionary and online flashcard collection has many free printables that you can add to your deck. Currently we do not have expanded sets. As soon as they become available we will post an announcement in our Facebook page.

My newborn has auditory atresia and may be partially or completely deaf. He is only one month old now but we have two daughters ages 2 and 3. I want them to know sign for him and I also want to get started. We will be using ASL. Is this where we start? Or do I need to start somewhere else? I have not been told yet what resources we should use but I’m eager to start!

    ADMIN – Hi Cortney,

This is a great place to teach your baby and your older daughters ASL.

Hello, This has been a GREAT source for me. You should know that in our country (Kuwait) most mothers when expecting don’t bother to research and read. They learn from their mothers and women around them or their doctors for the more complicated stuff. However, I love researching and reading and i am very opinionated when it comes to my baby and how to handle and raise him. I was fascinated by BSL. what a great way to communicate with my little man! this concept DOES NOT exist here and I bet I am the only and first Kuwaiti trying this method. when my baby and I succeed in BSL, I surely am going to spread the knowledge. I’m trying to keep a low profile now though and not talk about it yet. Don’t need the negative feedback or the unsupportive comments since its new people wouldn’t understand or accept it. But when we succeed I’m sure they’ll be interested. However because of that, it limits my signing to my baby around other people and we are a very social community. I’ve been signing for my baby the words “more” , “all done” and a little of “milk” in arabic and english since he was 6.5 months. in a week, he’ll be 8 months and still didn’t get a sign 🙁 is it too early to see results? Does it work with only a couple of words? or should I increase to 5 or 6 words?

Thanks, this site has been a great help.

    ADMIN – Hi Duaa,

Great to hear you are signing in Kuwait. We love hearing from people from different countries and how they are adapting the concept for their local language and culture.

Starting with a few common words that are highly motivated like more, all done, and milk is perfect. It is common to not get a sign back after just 6 weeks when you start that young. Each child will start when they are ready, but to give you a timeline I would definitely expect some return signs by 9 months. So stick with it, you are on the right track.

My son is 5months old. We speak mostly English in our home. I want him to learn Spanish as well as sign language. When I sign to him, should I say the word in English and then in Spanish? or will this confuse him. Is he too young to start using the flash cards?

    ADMIN – Hi Sarita,

Many bilingual families use Baby Sign Language as the bridge between two language. I would just say the word in one language and make the accompanying sign. For example, saying agua, and making the water sign. Other times you would say the english water and make the water sign. With the common sign and the common context, your child will learn that agua and water have the same meaning.

How do you sign Barney? I have a little girl that likes Barney.

    ADMIN – Hi Angela,

Names like Barney, are usually finger-signed (i.e. spelled out). But, we would improvise and use the sign for dinosaur (or purple dinosaur if they are more advanced) to keep things simple.

I truly appreciate the fact you make your materials available for us to use however I feel compelled to provide feedback about something. The photos used on your flashcards do not depict a variety of cultures. In today’s programs we want to connect with a wide cross culture of people and it’s important to use multi-cultural materials. I hope to see a cross section of multi cultural representation in your materials soon. Thanks,

    Chelley Correa

    ADMIN – Hi Chelley,

Thanks for you feedback. We would like to make the materials as accessible as possible to anyone that is interested in learning Baby Sign Language. As part of that mission, we would like to depict many different cultures. For example in our books you will see a variety of races, ages, and genders represented in the diagrams.

The downloadable flash cards are not very diverse. We would like to show more diversity in the flash cards as you suggest. One challenge is that we use a lot of stock photography, and stock photography is not particularly diverse. If you or anyone else has more diverse high quality imagery we can use, it would be greatly appreciated.

I work with a very diverse population and am introducing many new moms to baby sign language. I found these flash cards to be help but it did amaze me that all the photos of people are of only one race ex. (flash cards of; girl, again, happy, grandmother, grandfather, daddy, happy, laugh, sad, mommy, kiss, quiet, excited. I think it would be even more beneficial if they were more reflective of the all the different people that may be using them.

    ADMIN – Hi MaiNhia,

We always welcoming submissions from our community. If you have a photo of little ones signing that will best represent your working group please send it our way and we will incorporate it in the flashcards. In the next few months we will be adding additional flashcards with representation for several cultural groups. We are glad you are here and appreciate your feedback and engagement.
